Coastal Hazard Message
National Weather Service Portland OR
940 PM PST Wed Jan 16 2019
...HIGH SURF WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 10 AM THURSDAY TO
10 AM PST FRIDAY...
* WAVES AND SURF...West-southwest swell combined with a south wind
wave will produce waves near 25 feet along the central Oregon
coastline. Breaker heights up to 30 feet are possible.
* TIMING...Waves above 20 feet along the central Oregon coastline
around 10am Thursday. Peak wave heights are expected to be late
Thursday afternoon through the evening hours. This will create
dangerous surf conditions Thursday morning through Friday
morning.
* IMPACTS...The surf zone will be very hazardous due to strong
currents and breaking waves. Very large waves will run up much
higher on the beaches than normal. These powerful waves can
sweep people off jetties and other exposed rocks. They can also
easily move large logs and other beach debris.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A High Surf Warning means that dangerously high surf will batter
beaches in the warning area, producing deadly rip currents and
minor beach erosion.
